Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
