Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
